"Since many human beings are still victims of dehumanizing poverty, injustice and oppression, the brothers should devote themselves, with all people of good will, to restoring the social order, so that it can be based upon justice, liberation and peace in the risen Christ. After weighing the causes of injustice in each situation, the brothers should participate in activities that build up charity, justice and international solidarity. The brothers should spare themselves neither toil nor hardship in building up the reign of the God of Peace"
- Brother Herman Schaluck, ofm
While our Regional Council does not have a specific Peace, Justice & Ecology Commission, all brothers and sisters are reminded and encouraged that is the responsibility of all Secular Franciscans to become educated and informed about such issues and take every opportunity possible to do good works in these areas.
The Rule of the Secular Franciscan Order includes specific directions in these areas:
Peace:
Rule 19: "Mindful that they are bearers of peace which must be built up unceasingly, they should seek out ways of unity and fraternal harmony through dialogue, trusting in the presence of the divine seed in everyone and in the transforming power of love and pardon."
Justice:
Rule 15: "Let them individually and collectively be in the foremost in promoting justice by the testimony of their human lives and their courageous initiatives. Especially in the field of public life, they should make definite choices in harmony with their faith."
Ecology:
Rule 18: "Moreover, they should repect all creatures, animate and inanimate, which "bear the imprint of the Most High", and they should strive to move from the temptation of exploiting creation to the Franciscan concept of kinship."
